High desert cliffs and a remote trail

Mustang

Upper Mustang Trek

Walled Lo Manthang and a high desert kingdom north of the Annapurnas.

Upper Mustang feels unlike the rest of Nepal: red cliffs, cave dwellings, and a Tibetan-influenced culture in Lo Manthang. It is a restricted region, so permits are a real part of the planning — we handle them in Kathmandu.

Walking is on dry trails rather than forest. The season is narrower, and the route needs a restricted-area permit arranged before you travel.

Lo Manthang (about 3,840 m) is the cultural capital of the former kingdom. Upper Mustang requires a restricted-area permit and a licensed guide; the best window is usually March–November, with winter cold and summer mud to avoid. Most itineraries fly to Jomsom or approach overland from Pokhara.
